Formally described in 2015 from Yunnan, China. It was previously misidentified before DNA analysis confirmed its distinct lineage. The mushroom is highly sought after by mycologists and foragers alike.

Why does it bruise blue?

Unlike psilocybin mushrooms, the blue bruising in L. asiatica is caused by the oxidation of specific chemical compounds when the flesh is exposed to air.
